Driver Tip: How to Disable Automatic Driver Installation

Suppose you have connected a device with your computer; Windows 7 automatically searches for the driver and installs it. If you want to select every driver manually (because you have a manual driver that is better), then you should disable automatic driver installation. To do this you don’t need to install any software at all, you can do this using Windows Driver Settings.
  • Go to Start–>Search type in gpedit.msc
  • Click the file to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  • Go to: Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Device Installation. Click on the subfolder Device Installation on the left and on the right side you will see the possible restrictions.
  • Right Click on Prevent Installation of Devices not described by other policy settings and edit this option, set it on ENABLED.
  • Reboot Windows.
Alternatively, you can do the following:
  • Open Control panel > Advanced System settings > hardware tab > Device Installation settings.
  • You can also access it by opening Control Panel > Device & printers > Right Click the Computer under Devices and select Device Installation settings.
  • Here select No, let me choose what to do. Click Save changes.

BIOS Tip: When is it Time to Update My BIOS?

We get a lot of people who ask, “How do I know when I should upgrade my BIOS?” It could be different for everyone, but usually there are some tell-tale signs.

If you’re experiencing strange behavior such as blue screens or your system restarting, or you’re looking for more functionality such as the ability to add a larger hard drive to your system, then a BIOS update is definitely something you will need to consider.

Motherboard makers are constantly enhancing the BIOS firmware and the end result can be significantly improved performance, less buggy behavior, additional functionality, improved overclocking performance, and much more.

Registry Tip: Do You Have A Corrupted Registry?

How can you know if you have a corrupted registry?

There are a few symptoms which tell you that you have a corrupted registry. Certain computers show several of these symptoms, while others only some. The degree in which your computer displays these symptoms depends on how bad the registry is corrupted.
  1. Slow Running Windows Applications – This is one of the most widely reported symptoms of a corrupt registry. Opening documents, switching between programs and the like takes longer and longer to accomplish leading to massive frustration.
  2. Computer Screen Freezes – A very common error. Most screen freezes happen when you switch between programs or try to exit a program.
  3. Random Error Messages – This is the scariest problem because the messages are very hard to diagnose. An example would be the ever popular “Blue Screen Of Death” memory dump error screen.
  4. Slow PC Shutdown and/or Startups – Extremely slow loading and shutdowns. More than 5 minutes.
Registry Wizard can help keep your registry optimized.

Question and Answer
When I had Windows XP, I configured my system to be able to open documents and programs with one click. Now, I’ve upgraded to Windows 7 and I can't find the way to reconfigure the double clicks to single. Can you help me?
- Fred N., Bellevue, WA
Go to My Computer –> Press Alt on the keyboard and you will see the File and Edit menu. Select Folder Options from the Tools menu.

Under the General tab, change the Click items as follows from Double-click to open an item (single-click to select) to single-click to open an item (point to select).

You can also change the settings to underline the icon titles always or only when you point at them.

Click Apply and OK to make the changes. Now you can use single click using mouse to open files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Please Help! I accidentally deleted some very precious family photos from my hard drive and I need to get them back. Is there anything I can do?
- Gary D., Ocean City, MD
Actually there is something you can do. We here at TouchStoneSoftware .com offer a very effective data recovery tool called FileRestorePlus. It recovers files from Hard Drives, USB Thumb Drives, Camera Media Cards, Floppy Disks and other storage devices.

It can also recover files that have been emptied from the Recycle Bin, permanently deleted files within Windows using the Shift + Delete, and files that have been deleted from within a Command Prompt.

Duplicate Files!! I recently found six copies of the same file on my PC. When I looked further, I found that I have hundreds of duplicate files on my hard drive. I’ve read this can cause my PC to be slow and nonresponsive at times. Is there an easy way to identify and safely remove duplicate files from a PC?
- Howard S., Cleveland, OH
Removing duplicate files from your PC not only can improve the performance of your computer, but it also prevents the possibility of sending out the wrong file to someone. Manually finding and removing duplicate files can be tricky and quite time consuming. There is a simple program that will safely and quickly do the job. We have tested and recommend Easy Duplicate Finder.
