BIOS Tip: Why Should I Update My BIOS?

Even though updating your BIOS comes with a certain amount of risk, the potential rewards definitely make it worth it.

Motherboard manufacturers are constantly making enhancements to the BIOS firmware and the effects can significantly improve the performance of your system. It can also create additional functionality, make your system less buggy, and improve overclocking performance. BIOS updates can also be created to address something small but important, such as adding support for a higher frequency RAM or a new CPU.

It’s best to check periodically with BIOS Agent Plus to see if any new versions of your BIOS have been released.

Registry Tip: Task Manager Disabled

We recently had a customer ask us why their Task Manager option was grayed out on the Taskbar Right Click Menu.

There is a registry key that will disable Task Manager, and how or why it gets disabled is a mystery.  In most cases it will be due to spyware.

If this option is grayed out on your system, then this is how you fix it:

Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then navigate down to the following key:

On the right-hand side is a 32-bit REG_DWORD value named DisableTaskMgr with one of two values:

  • 1 – Disable task manager

  • 0 – Enable task manager
Just double-click and change the value, or even delete the key. The change should take place immediately.

Question and Answer
My wife and I own two identical HP Pavilion dv7 notebooks running Windows 7 with 8GB RAM. Over the past couple of months I've noticed my notebook is running VERY slow compared to my wife's. Plus I am getting blue screens or "BSOD". I called HP and the tech instructed me to reinstall Windows 7. However, I am very concerned that I will lose most, if not all, of my important documents and files. Is there a simple fix that that will prevent me from having to reinstall Windows 7 and losing data? Please help!!!!

I’m about to buy a new computer, and before I do, I’d like to back up my Outlook emails. This way, when I have my new computer, I can move them over to the new system easily. Can you tell me how to do this?
- Michael G., Grand Junction, CO
Backing up your emails through Outlook has become a simple process. In Outlook, select the File tab and choose OPTIONS. Select Advanced. Under the Export heading, click the EXPORT button. From the list of export options, select Export To A File and click NEXT. Select Outlook Data File from the list of File Types. Select a source folder, like your Inbox for example. Then select a destination and click the radio button that describes what to do with duplicates. Click Finish. You will be asked if you want to place a password on the file. Now, when it is time to restore the emails to the new computer, follow this same procedure, but select one of the IMPORT functions after choose EXPORT.

While using my wireless internet connection, it gets slow at times and other times runs great. Could this be a problem with my router?
- A. Burke, Palmdale, CA
The most common reason for a slow connection is that it is being shared with others who are using up the bandwidth, possibly for video streaming or downloading large files. When this is happening, you should notice a drop in web speed. If you are using cable internet, it could also be possible that your connection is affected by the number of people in your area. Cable internet is sent of the same line as cable TV and you may be sharing the line with a large number of people. When many people in your area are online or watching TV, you may experience a drop in your connection speed.

Since Twitter lacks threaded conversations, it is sometimes difficult to know what a certain tweet was a response to. Try to include some sort of indication what question you are referring to. Perhaps retweet the message in your reply to make it obvious to what you were replying.
