Driver Tip: Legacy Audio Drivers

Legacy audio drivers can get corrupted or go missing for some strange reason and it is one of the most common problems that a person encounters with his computers. It can be pretty frustrating because you have to log on to the Internet and then visit the manufacturer's website to look for the Legacy Audio driver updates. If you ask some technical support people, they will tell you to uninstall and then reinstall the program. This doesn't work at all.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the program can sometimes solve the problem, but not for long. Sometimes, there are updates that you need to do on your hardware to make it work with the system that you have. The problem with your driver could be that it has a bug. Downloading an update will help fix this bug. This also means that the update will improve your computer's performance.

To download the update for your Legacy audio drivers, you just need to go to manufacturer's website to download the driver. You will be able to find the driver updates there, and you will probably be overwhelmed with the number of drivers that you can see. It really can be confusing.

BIOS Tip: Overclocking Assistant

We are constantly asked about overclocking features and many new Intel BIOS contain a new feature called Overclocking Assistant.

Intel's overclocking assistant in the BIOS makes Overclocking even easier if tweaking for performance and the BIOS options are a little much. By contrast, those who do tweak can use the tool to find some good baseline starting points for overclocking based on the data that Intel has acquired through its testing of the platform.

When set to Manual, the User must manually configure Performance questions.

When set to Automatic, all Performance questions (including those in subscreens) are grayed out except for Processor Speed (GHz), Internal Graphics Speed (GHz), Memory Speed (MHz); the following questions are set as follows:

  • Failsafe Watchdog - Enable
  • Host Clock Frequency (MHz) - 100
  • Processor Voltage Override Type - None
  • Intel® Turbo Boost Technology - Enable
  • Sustained Mode Time (Seconds) - 1
  • IGD Current Limit (Amps) - 64
  • Active Core-Based Ratio Limits - Disable
Found in the performance section it allows you to quickly and simply choose processor speed (up to 4.6GHz) and memory speed, in excess of 2000MHz.

Registry Tip: Adding Control Panel to Right Click Menu

Control Panel is something that most Windows users access quite frequently. So it would be very useful to find a way to access it more quickly. Here is a registry tweak that allows you to add Control Panel to your right click menu.

Open up REGEDIT through the start menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key:

Once you are there, you'll want to right-click on "shell" and create a new key called Control Panel.

Once "shell" is created, you'll want to right-click and create a new key called "command".

Now select the "command" key, and on the left-hand side right click the (Default) value on the right-hand side and choose MODIFY.

The EDIT STRING box will open. In the VALUE DATA box, type:
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL

You should immediately see the new item in your right click menu, and it should be working. To remove, simply delete the Control Panel key.

Question and Answer
Slow Dell Notebook!!! I have a Dell Inspiron 17R that is less than 12 months old. Over the past 5-6 months it has become increasingly slow and unresponsive. Dell support suggested that I need to format my hard drive due to potential viruses but I don't have the Windows CD. Is it possible to format my notebook without the Windows Installation CD?
- Susan DeLeon - Naples, FL

Duplicate Files? My wife and I share a 3 year old computer. Between the two of us, we have pretty much filled up the huge 100GB hard disk. Apparently this has really slowed down the performance of the system. I believe we have MANY duplicate files on the PC. Most of which are photos and music. Is there an easy way to detect and remove the duplicate files on our computer? Thanks in advance.
- Allan Brady - San Francisco, CA

We recommend Easy Duplicate Finder. Removing duplicate files from your computer not only can improve the performance of your computer, but it saves money by freeing up valuable disk space. Manually finding and removing duplicate files can be tricky and quite time consuming. Easy Duplicate Finder is a simple program that will safely and quickly do the job.

On my Start Menu, under All Programs, it has become very unmanageable with too many folders and programs. Is there a way I can condense and rearrange the items in the All Programs menu?
- Michael H., Cross Hill, SC

This is an easy thing to fix in Windows and also a very helpful fix. In the Search box in your Start Menu, type: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and press ENTER. This will open the Programs folder which contains only shortcuts to the real programs and folders, so you can move them around as much as you want. Use the left pane, which displays the folder and lets you expand subfolders, to help. To avoid confusing Windows, restart the PC afterward.

Tech Tip
Internet Explorer 9 Provides Malware Protection
Internet Explorer 9 includes features to better protect you from malware attacks. First, the Application Reputation system provides pop-up information about file downloads and helps to provide a warning when dealing with downloadable content. Microsoft's reputation database shows you red warnings if the download is known to offer malicious content. Another helpful feature is Tracking Protection, which is designed to block third party tracking of your PC from web sites. Both of these features can be accessed and toggled on and off by clicking the Tools menu in IE9.

It may look desperate, but asking costs nothing and often gets positive results. Ask for a retweet. If there's something you want to share with many people, simply ask them to retweet. To keep it short you can just add "please RT" to the message.
