Driver Tip: Installing Drivers Without A Setup or Install File

We are still asked how to install drivers that do not contain a Setup or Install file. If the file is not a single executable file, then most likely it will be a CAB file or a ZIP file. In those cases, extract the file to a location on your hard drive. Then:
  1. Right-click My Computer.

  2. Choose Properties

  3. Choose Device Manager (In Windows 2000, you have to choose the Hardware tab first and then Device Manager). This will display a list of the devices that are on your computer.

  4. Right click on the device and click Properties.

  5. Choose Driver and click Update Driver.

  6. You will be asked to browse for the new driver, locate the folder you placed it in choose the appropriate file.

BIOS Tip: Still Necessary To Upgrade Your BIOS?

One question we get asked a lot is "Is it still necessary to upgrade my BIOS in this day and age?" The answer is most definitely YES!

First, for those of you who do not know, let's go over what a BIOS actually is. The BIOS, which stands for Basic Input/Output System, is primarily responsible for initializing your systems hardware directly after powering up and begins the process of starting your operating system. The BIOS contains the codes your system requires to control the keyboard, display screen, disk drives, serial and USB communications, and other miscellaneous functions.

If your BIOS is out of date, your motherboard will not be able to utilize all of its features to their full potential, if even able to use them at all. An out of date BIOS will cause your computer to run inefficiently and eventually may cause the computer to fail to run some devices at all. Updating your BIOS will increase your computer's speed and compatibility with newer hardware. All the hardware attached to the motherboard, such as the RAM, processor, video card and disk drives, can be configured to a greater or lesser degree through the BIOS. Memory timings, processor speed and overclocking, hard disk detection and booting are all properties controlled by the motherboard's BIOS.

If you have an older computer, and want to upgrade to a newer, larger hard drive or to a newer operating system such as Windows 7, then upgrading your BIOS is definitely a good idea. This will ensure that your computer is up to date and ready for the improvements you are planning.

Registry Tip: Changing the Registered Owner of Windows

If you've ever wondered how to change the name of the person that Windows is registered to, here is how to do it. This might come in handy if you get a computer from somebody else.

Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search box, and then locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Now you can find the RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization keys in the right-hand pane. Change them to whatever values you want. To show off the new changes, just type winver.exe into the start menu search box to see the About Windows box. This should work in all versions of Windows, including Windows 7.

Question and Answer
Recently I had an issue where my email and my online banking account were hacked by cyber thieves. My bank had explained to me that there has been a rash of these types of cyber attacks in recent years and I should make sure that I change my password periodically. In addition, they also mentioned that many of their customers had fallen prey to key logging. Can you explain to me what that is and if there is anything I can do to prevent key logging? This has been a real hassle!
- Walter W., Albuquerque, NM

Keystroke Logging or Key Logging is usually the byproduct of a trojan horse, virus, or malware installed on a computer. The goal of these small programs is to secretly record any time that you type on the keyboard. The keys and sequence of the keys are being recorded for everything that you type, with particular attention being paid to websites and fields that require log in credentials. The key logged data is then sent to a cyber thief who will exploit your accounts. As a preventive measure, TouchStoneSoftware recommends Zemana AntiLogger to detect and eliminate malware on your computer. AntiLogger adds an extra layer of essential protection to your computer.

I use Internet Explorer 9 and I cannot figure out how to change my home page. Can you help me?
- Sally D. , Lee's Summit, MO

Open Internet Explorer 9 and navigate to the page you want to use for your new home page. Once the page has loaded, click the TOOLS icon from the upper right corner of the screen, and select INTERNET OPTIONS. Click the USE CURRENT button from the top of the GENERAL tab. You should see URL for the page you want to use in the text box. Click OK to finish.

Why is the total space of the hard available on a hard drive less than what it is supposed to be?
- Peter C., St. Louis, MO

The biggest difference comes in the way that drive space is measured in the first place. Drive manufacturers measure drive space in decimal terms. For example, they call one gigabyte 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems use binary terms, so Windows considers one gigabyte 1,073,741,824 bytes. So when Windows reports available space on a drive, the resulting calculation suggests that the drive is smaller than what is advertised. Another issue is that drive manufacturers measure the size of the drives in terms of TOTAL space, meaning every single bit on the disk. The problem is that you cannot store date on every single bit on the disk. Formatting the drive takes up some space and Windows takes up space as well.

Tech Tip
Throwing Away Your Computer? Make sure someone cannot access your old deleted files!
When you delete a file or a folder, it's not really gone. In fact, even if you empty your Recycle Bin, your deleted files can easily be recovered by anyone who has basic file recovery software. Your sensitive data, such as your financial records, passwords and documents, are at risk unless they are deleted in a way that makes them unrecoverable. That is why you need Easy File Shredder.

With Easy File Shredder you will be able to shred files and free disk space so that your confidential information cannot be recovered even with file recovery software.
