Question and Answer
Windows STOP Errors or Blue Screen of Death can be caused by several factors. You can try to do a repair of Windows or actually re-install Windows all together. However, before you do that we typically suggest trying a program called Reimage. Within minutes after downloading Reimage you can automatically repair and replace corrupted files, removes virus damage and more. Here's how it works: First, Reimage's free scan will detect all the errors on your computer's Windows OS. Next Reimage's patented technology not only removes damage, but also reverses the damage done to your Windows OS by replacing corrupted and deleted files with fresh Windows files and components from their updated online database. Your notebook's performance, stability and security will be restored and improved. Perhaps this is why PC World referred to Reimage as "a Miracle Software".

With today's hard drive technologies, is it still necessary to defragment my hard drive? Do you recommend any good defrag programs?
– Sam W., Sacramento, CA

Defragmenting your hard drive quite simply means to reorganize the way information is stored on a computer disk so that all of the information belonging to a file is stored in a single, contiguous area on the disk. Since hard disk seek time is one of the most significant bottlenecks in a computer's performance, "fragmented" data can drag down your computer's speed quite a bit. If you have an excessive amount of "fragmented" files on your hard disk, you might hear extra grinding, sputtering, and other weird noises coming from your computer. That is one indication that defragmenting your hard disk is a good idea. A second indication is when your computer doesn't open files as quickly as it did before. While hard drives size have become larger over the last few years, the drives still operate and store data the same way they always have. TouchStoneSoftware recommends O&O Defrag 17. Defragmentation with O&O Defrag 17 gives you faster system starts, speeds up programs, and prevents new fragmentation from even occurring. Note: SSD (Solid State Drives) do not require defragmenting and performing a defrag can actually reduce the life of your SSD drive.

A recent article I read said that if you use Google Chrome as your access to the Internet instead of Internet Explorer, they will keep on security features so you can continue using Windows XP. Do you know if that is correct?
– Andrew J., Ithaca, NY
Yes, Google has said it will continue to support the Chrome browser for XP computers until April 2015. Microsoft ended technical and security support for the 12-year-old XP recently, a move aimed at encouraging users to upgrade to a new operating system. "Our goal is to support Chrome for XP users during this transition process," Google said in October. "Most importantly, Chrome on XP will still be automatically updated with the latest security fixes to protect against malware and phishing attacks." Chrome is an excellent alternative to IE or Firefox even if your computer isn't powered by XP.

Find a file fast. If you know the name (or even part of the name) of the file you're looking for, click the Start button and then enter the name into the Search Programs And Files folder.
