Question and Answer
Last week I took my two year old HP Pavilion notebook to a BEST BUY repair center after apparently getting hit with a sneaky virus or malware that caused damage to many of my files and Windows 8. The BEST BUY technician confirmed that a bunch of files were corrupted, resulting in application errors, which pretty much killed the performance. And now I'm nervous if my notebook is secure after being infected. Best Buy's solution is to sell me a new hard drive and to re-install Windows 8. But I don't have the Windows 8 CD, nor can I afford what they want to charge me. Can you folks suggest an alternative way to fix my notebook?

I was on vacation in Italy last month and took hundreds of great photos of all the historical sites and many more of my family having a great time. I must have messed something up after transferring the photos from my memory card to my computer because I can no longer find my photos. I've done a Windows Search and I've looked in my Recycle Bin. I see that TouchStoneSoftware has a program named UndeletePlus. Can you explain how this program works? What are the chances I can get my photos back?
– Kelsey M., Biddeford, ME

We're quite confident that TouchStoneSoftware UndeletePlus will be able to get your photos back. I’m using Windows 7. In the past whenever I was having issues with my computer, I would do a System Restore to fix it. But lately when I try to do that, I get “System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer’s system files and settings were not changed.” Can you tell me what is wrong?
– Daniel A., Kent, OH

System Restore can fail for a number of reasons, and when a user encounters problems, one of the best procedures is to run it in Safe Mode. To start Windows 7 in Safe Mode, restart the computer. Press and hold the F8 key as the computer restarts. If you see the Windows logo, you waited too long to press F8. Eventually you will see an Advanced Boot Options screen. Use the Arrows on your keyboard to highlight the Safe Mode with Networking option and press Enter. Now that you’re running in Safe Mode, you can try System Restore again. Click Start, then Control Panel, and select System and Security. Select Action Center and finally select Recovery. Click on Open System Restore and then select a restore point.

BIOS Tip – Is Upgrading My BIOS Still Necessary?

One question we get asked a lot is "Is it still necessary to upgrade my BIOS in this day and age?" The answer is most definitely YES!

First, for those of you who do not know, let's go over what a BIOS actually is. The BIOS, which stands for Basic Input/Output System, is primarily responsible for initializing your systems hardware directly after powering up and begins the process of starting your operating system. The BIOS contains the codes your system requires to control the keyboard, display screen, disk drives, serial and USB communications, and other miscellaneous functions.

If your BIOS is out of date, your motherboard will not be able to utilize all of its features to their full potential, if even able to use them at all. An out of date BIOS will cause your computer to run inefficiently and eventually may cause the computer to fail to run some devices at all. Updating your BIOS will increase your computer's speed and compatibility with newer hardware. All the hardware attached to the motherboard, such as the RAM, processor, video card and disk drives, can be configured to a greater or lesser degree through the BIOS. Memory timings, processor speed and overclocking, hard disk detection and booting are all properties controlled by the motherboard's BIOS.

If you have an older computer, and want to upgrade to a newer, larger hard drive or to a newer operating system such as Windows 8, then upgrading your BIOS is definitely a good idea. This will ensure that your computer is up to date and ready for the improvements you are planning.
