Question and Answer
It's been more than 10 minutes! That's how long it now takes for my 2 year old notebook to boot up, after upgrading to Windows 10. This on top of being noticeably slower at times for no reason is driving me insane. My question is whether I should buy a new PC or can you suggest a good tune-up tool to fix and safely restore what I have?
– Dr. Willis A., Brentwood, CA
Don't replace your notebook, fix it. The best solution to safely clean up, boost and restore your PC is a program TouchStoneSoftware recommends named Reimage. Simply download Reimage and within minutes the program will safely scan and diagnose your system for problems like a virus, malware and broken or corrupted files. Reimage will even detect if there's a problem with your Windows operating system. Next, Reimage's patented technology will seamlessly repair and restore your computer to peak performance.

Why is the total space of the hard available on a hard drive less than what it is supposed to be?
– Peter C., St. Louis, MO

The biggest difference comes in the way that drive space is measured in the first place. Drive manufacturers measure drive space in decimal terms. For example, they call one gigabyte 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems use binary terms, so Windows considers one gigabyte 1,073,741,824 bytes. So when Windows reports available space on a drive, the resulting calculation suggests that the drive is smaller than what is advertised.

Driver Tip: Why You Should Always Keep Drivers Up To Date

Drivers are simply a piece of software that allows higher level computer programs like Windows to interact with a hardware device. In other words, a driver allows Windows to recognize and work with the hardware in your computer. Windows itself incorporates some basic drivers for things like mice and keyboards but most drivers are created by the manufacturer of the specific hardware device.

Drivers are required for integral devices like graphics cards, sound cards, wireless adapters and network (wired/LAN) adapters but are also needed for external hardware like printers, webcams and scanners.

Updating a driver is often a useful first step in troubleshooting any hardware related issue in Windows. Also, driver updates are often released to fix an issue with how Windows works with a piece of hardware or to enable new features for it. Therefore, even if your hardware appears to be working fine now, we normally recommend updating drivers as a preemptive measure. This helps ensure that you don’t have issues in the future, especially if the date of your existing driver is already more than a year old.

PC Performance Tip: Anti-Virus Disappeared After Windows 10 Upgrade

Recently we’ve been asked frequently about anti-virus programs disappearing after upgrading to Windows 10. This appears to be a common issue that we’re hearing a lot about. Here is what you can do to fix it.

Microsoft tells us on their site that during the migration from one OS to Windows 10, some programs will not be able to migrate. This is due to incompatibility with the new OS.

If your anti-virus is missing in Windows 10, the solution is simple. All you need to do is go download another copy of your favorite antivirus program and reinstall it - do not reinstall an old version from an old download or an old CD, as it most likely won't be compatible with Windows 10.

You may be asked for a license key (if you are using a paid subscription), so be sure to have that handy, as it may not be automatically entered during the installation. However, the Windows 10 upgrade will supposedly keep this information inside the Windows Registry, so you may not have to re-enter the license during a reinstall.

BIOS Tip – State After Power Fail

We get asked a lot of questions about what each setting in the BIOS does. Every so often we will review a setting in this space and explain what the setting does. In this issue we are going to discuss the setting State After Power Fail.

The setting State After Power Fail deals with the state of your system after the system loses power. In some systems it may be called Power On After Power Fail. In that case the setting is self explanatory. If you set Power On After Power Fail to YES, then when power resumes the system will power on. If you set it to NO, then the system will remain off when power resumes.

However with State After Power Fail, you will have several options.

The first option is a setting called Stay Off. This setting, when selected, will keep your computer off when the power is restored.

The second option is a setting called Last State. This setting, when selected, will put your system in the state it was in when power was lost..

The third option is a setting called Power On. This setting, when selected, will turn the system on when power is restored. If you have a setting that you would like explained in a future newsletter, please let us know.

Tech Tip

Personalize your Windows 10 Desktop

Windows 10 lets you personalize your desktop more thoroughly than before. Head to Start > Settings > Personalization > Colors, and choose Show color on taskbar and Start Menu. You can also tell it to automatically pick a color from your wallpaper and apply it underneath icons of open apps, and you can remove the Start Menu’s translucent option.
