Question and Answer
Can you suggest how I can clean-up and restore my HP - Pavilion notebook? It seems since I upgraded to Windows 10, it has become increasingly slow. Whether it is when I boot-up or surf the web it is painfully slower over time. Something tells me I have a hidden problem that my Avast anti-virus isn't finding. It's a great system so I want to restore it to its better days. And please keep it simple. I'm not a techie.
– Tommy B., Costa Mesa, CA

The best solution we've tested and suggest is a "super fix" program called Reimage. First, Reimage's free system scan will detect any Windows problems like missing or corrupt files, a hidden virus and malware threats. Next, Reimage's patented repair process reverses the damage done to your Windows OS by replacing corrupted and deleted files with fresh Windows files. Finally, Reimage removes detected virus and malware threats and completely cleans your system. This will restore your PC's performance, stability and security.

Whenever I boot up my laptop, I find myself always increasing the display brightness. Am I hurting my laptop by doing this?
– Lisa G., Brooklyn, NY

Laptops displays used to rely on Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tubes (CCFT’s) as the backlight source. These had a very limited life and reducing the output could prolong its working life. But today, the CCFT’s are long life and, in some cases replace by white LED’s, which have an incredibly long working life. So turning down the display brightness today will have very little direct benefit for your laptop.

Why do I always get a message asking me if I want to “force” the system to close an application when I’ve already closed everything?
– Danielle M., Houston, TX

You may have closed all of the applications that you know about but there may still be something running somewhere. Many programs run in the background and you are not aware of it. That message simply means that it is closing very slowly. Windows is ready to proceed with the shutdown but the applications are not. Normally if you wait a minute, they will close. If not, there is usually no harm in forcing a program to close.

Driver Tip: Updating Drivers Manually in Windows 10

Most drivers these days will install automatically with just the click of the mouse. However there are still some drivers that require a manual installation. Here is a step by step guide on how to do that in Windows 10:

1. Open Windows 10 Control Panel by pressing Win+X (Windows key and X key) at the same time and clicking Control Panel.

2. Click View By and Choose Small Icons.

3. Click Device Manager.

4. In Device Manager window, expand categories and locate the device that you wish to update the driver for. Then right-click on the device name and select Update Driver Software.

5. In the pop-up window, you will see two options. Click Browse my computer for driver software.

6. Choose Browse My Computer For Driver Software.

7. Click on Browse to find the location of the downloaded driver file and browse to the location of the driver file. Keep the box marked Include Subfolders checked.

8. Once the location has been selected, click Next.

Windows will locate the file automatically and install it.

PC Performance Tip: Windows 10 God Mode

For those Windows 10 users hungry to have similar god-like powers, Windows 10 has its own GodMode. GodMode for Windows 10 gives you access to 262 new god-like powers. And, while it doesn't give you unlimited lives or save you from bluescreens, it does expose some additional features and tools to play with.

Enabling GodMode is pretty simple. You simply create a new folder (can be created anywhere, but I suggest putting it on the Windows 10 Desktop so it's easy to locate), and give the new folder an intricately specific name.

Create a New Folder on the desktop.

Rename the folder to exactly this (copy and paste is best):

Welcome to GodMode! Have fun with it.

While this tip is for Windows 10, it also works for other versions of Windows. Try it on the version you are using. Works great for Windows 8.1, which exposes 270 functions.

BIOS Tip: Tweaking BIOS to Improve Boot Speed

Tweaking your BIOS settings can be a good way to get your system to boot faster. Just a simple change of some of the key settings can make dramatic differences in how fast your system boots up.

Enable the "Quick Boot" Feature: Many newer PC’s have a special BIOS setting, usually called "Quick Boot" or "Quick Power On Self Test" that can be enabled to make the boot take less time. Try enabling this setting; this will cause the BIOS to skip some of the normal test routines that it performs at boot time, speeding up the boot process.

Remove the Boot Delay Setting: Some PC’s have a BIOS setting that you can use to intentionally delay the boot-up of the PC by several seconds. This setting is often called "Boot Delay" or "Power-on Delay". This can be useful when the BIOS is booting too quickly, causing hard disk drives to be booted before they are ready. However, it also slows the boot process down, so make sure that it is only enabled if it is needed.

Disable Floppy Drive Seek: Also called “Boot Up Floppy Seek.” Most PCs have a BIOS setting to disable floppy drive seeking, which is the short access the BIOS makes to the floppy disk just before it boots the system. This seek (unless disabled) is performed regardless of whether the system is being booted from the hard disk or floppy disk. Disabling the seek speeds up the boot process by a couple of seconds. This doesn't really have any negative impact on the system, although if you are having problems with your floppy drive you will probably want to re-enable the seek as this makes troubleshooting some types of problems easier.

Tech Tip

Windows Hello

Windows 10 includes a suite of new biometric security features known as Windows Hello, and – if your computer has the necessary hardware – you can use fingerprint detection or face recognition to log in. From the Settings app (search for it from the taskbar) choose Accounts and then Sign-in options to see the different choices available.
