Question and Answer
Q: I have a few problems with my Acer laptop causing it to be noticeably slow and unstable. I traced the problem back to when I opened an email that I believe might have contained malware. Since then my PC shuts off without warning, takes several minutes to reboot and appears to freeze up. I'm also getting 'Chrome Not Responding' errors causing me to shut down the browser. Once in a while I'll get a corrupt file message too. My anti-virus comes back clean. The Acer support tech suggested I have a hidden virus or malware that corrupted Windows 10 and suggested I reinstall Windows or restore and repair my OS. I'd rather not re-install Windows in fear of losing data. How can I safely test and restore Windows for my laptop?
– Trip A. Burlington, VT

A: It sounds like one or more Windows files have been corrupted or deleted. The best all around tool that we've tested to repair and restore Windows is Windows Repair Tool. For more than 10 years, 50M+ users have trusted Windows Repair Tool to find and repair every Windows problem ranging from missing or corrupt files, viruses, malware and other nasty junk that damage PC performance. Here's what to do. It's simple. First download Windows Repair Tool and allow it to safely diagnose your system and provide a complete system report. Next, this app will safely repair and actually restore Windows without requiring a reinstall. The Windows Repair Tool has patented Windows repair and restore technology that replaces critical system files that have been damaged with fresh files. The end result is like a complete PC and Windows tune up without performing a risky Windows reinstall. Windows Repair Tool will repair and optimize your PC safely and return it to peak performance. Best of all, Windows Repair Tool is free to try.

Q: I have several older notebooks running Windows 7 and 8 that I no longer need or want. My problem is I still keep them around for the software that's installed on them. What's the easiest and safest way to move all the software from these PCs to my new Dell?
– Rhea G. Dallas, TX

A: I think most of us have been in this situation. The best tool we tested to safely and seamlessly move your files, folders, programs and even settings from one PC to another is FastMove. This simple to use app comes with a great support team and has been around for years. Whether you're transferring data between computers sharing the same OS version, moving files and settings from a Windows 8 to a Windows 11 PC, or migrating from a 32-bit to a 64-bit system, FastMove is the best app for the job.

Driver Tip: Check Your Device Driver Versions

If you are having issues with your computer it’s often necessary to check the versions of drivers that you have installed on your system, especially when the problem is with display drivers, which always seem to have the most issues.

There’s a command line utility that comes bundled with Windows that gives you similar output. It’s called driverquery.

Running the command with no parameters will give you the default output.

To get detailed output you can use the /v parameter: driverquery /v Or to output in list or csv format instead of the default table format, you can use the /FO switch: Driverquery /FO [list, table, csv] You can check out the full list of parameters to use with the command

BIOS Tip – Virus Warning

Many BIOS will have a setting called Virus Warning. This is different from any Anti-Virus software that you may have installed on your system. This is Boot Sector virus protection which protects the boot sector or partition table of your hard drive. When this function is enabled, if someone or something attempts to write to the boot sector or partition table of the hard drive, a warning message will appear on screen and an alarm will sound. When disabled, you will not get a warning message and no alarm will sound. This feature only protects the boot sector of the hard drive, it does not protect the entire drive. Your anti-virus program installed on your system will take care of the rest of the drive. Obviously, it is a very good idea to keep this option enabled in the BIOS.
